Nursing Philosophy
My nursing philosophy is rooted in the belief that effective nursing is a blend of relational, compassionate practice and a discipline grounded in evidence-based care and critical thinking. It is guided by the four metaparadigm concepts, viewing nursing as a collaborative partnership where patients are respected, supported, and actively involved in their health journey.
A key theoretical influence on my practice is Dorothea Orem's Self-Care Deficit Theory, which strongly resonates with my dedication to fostering patient autonomy, independence, and dignity in every interaction. I recognize that each individual contributes their unique history, values, and goals to their health experience. Therefore, just as I strive to build therapeutic relationships, I approach every patient with genuine respect and a commitment to understanding their priorities. Orem's focus on assisting patients when they are unable to meet their own needs reinforces my conviction that nurses are essential in empowering patients while delivering the appropriate level of care (Hood et al., 2022).
Health is a complex state influenced by a multitude of physical, emotional, and social factors. My role as a nurse is to promote wellness, ensure patient comfort, prevent complications, and facilitate recovery through thorough assessments, education, and evidence-based interventions. I integrate Orem's framework by continuously evaluating patients' self-care capabilities and determining where guidance, education, or direct care is necessary.
Furthermore, I recognize that the healing process is significantly shaped by the environment, encompassing the physical setting, the interpersonal relationships formed, and the wider healthcare system. I am committed to contributing to safe, inclusive, and supportive environments that encourage patient participation and confidence in their capacity for self-care.
Ultimately, nursing to me is a fusion of lifelong learning, accountability, and compassion. Oremls theory reinforces my fundamental approach: to meet patients wherever they are in their health journey, maintain their independence whenever possible, and advocate for their needs across all healthcare settings (Hood et al., 2022). This philosophy is the foundation for how I communicate, collaborate, make decisions, and continue to shape the nurse that I am striving to become.
